Christmas Sugar Cookies

Sugar Cookies Recipe

During this Holiday season we love to eat all the good food.  For me, I enjoy the desserts the most!  Growing up my mom would let us help make cut out sugar cookies in shapes of the season.  Our family celebrates Christmas and we would have cookies in the shape of Candy Canes, Christmas Trees, Bells, Gingerbread Men, Santa Claus and so on.

Here is my Moms Recipe that she has used for years and now that I am using:

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup margarine or butter, softened
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar

Combine powder sugar and margarine in large bowl. Stir in egg, vanilla and almond extract. Stir in flour, baking soda and cream of tartar.  Cover the bowl and put in refrigerater for 2 hours.

Heat the oven to 375 degrees. Roll half of dough at a time 1/8 inch thick on lightly floured surface.  Cut into desired shapes.  Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 7-8 minutes or until light brown.  Let cookies cool and then decorate how you like.   We always powdered sugar, milk with food coloring mix and painted them.

To do so get as many cups as needed for how many colors you want.  Put powdered sugar in the cups and add  milk…BUT EASY ON THE MILK!  Stir milk and powdered sugar till you have a nice painting style icing.  Somtimes a little thicker is better. If you want chocolate icing use some hersheys cocoa mix. Use thin paint brushes that you would find at any art or craft store.  Don’t use brushes you have used in the past to do actual painting.

Should make about 5 Dozen 2-2 1/2 inch cookies.
