Fish and Chips from Jenny Rollo |
As much as I resisted using “Fries” in the title, I went with the WTAE spelling and kept this as FISH FRYS. Being that I am originally from a small community upstate New York, I did not know that there was such a phenomenon that happens around the Lenten/Easter time where you celebrate battered fish, like you do in Pittsburgh.
Easter happens to be very late this year, which means the Lenten season will last well into the nicer weather of April, so I would expect this year they will be an even more popular item as people will be looking forward to getting outside on Fridays. However, Fish Frys don’t have to be something that just happens at your local religious establishment of choice. Local restaurants tend to get into the action around the season as well, with mixed success. For 2011, Habitat is joining the craze with an affordable downtown offering.
Habitat
If you are close to the action of downtown Pittsburgh, Habitat Executive Chef Andrew Morrison will offer his homemade fish & chips for $8 during Lent. Regularly a $16 menu item, the restaurant is embracing the popularity the fish fry. Enjoy Habitat’s Fish Fry – fresh cod served with pea puree, homemade French fries and tartar sauce. The best part is you don’t have to wait until the end of the week to enjoy it. The item is offered at the special price every weekday from March 1 through April 22, 2011.
Have a fish fry suggestion that is better? Well tell us about it! We’d love to hear.
The Oyster House in Market Square is probably the best and most popular spot for fried fish Downtown- love it.
