Great Grandma’s Haluski

by TasteBudAPosted on December 7, 2010May 28, 2020

It’s a great Pittsburgh tradition to have Haluski on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day with pork chops.  According to Wikipedia, this is an Americanized variation of the traditional Slovak dish. To this very day, we still utilize my Great Grandma’s Recipe below.

Serving Size: 5 People

Ingredients

6 oz of Egg Noodles
Water
1 onion – sliced and cut to desired length
1 cup of shredded cabbage
1 1/2 sticks of butter
1 can of Snowfloss Sauerkraut (Not Bavarian Style)

Directions

  • Bring water to a boil and add Egg Noodles.  Cook for 8 – 9 minutes.
  • Drain noodles and let stand.
  • In a fry pan melt 1 stick of butter and add onion, shredded cabbage and sauerkraut.  Slowly cook till onions get slightly tender.
  • Mix in noodles.
  • Cook on low heat for 5-10 minutes and add a half stick of butter, salt and pepper to taste.
